Mask of the Virtual Mummy

[mask]

The head of the mummy is made of several layers of linen covered with stucco as a surface for painting.

Mummy masks are not shaped after the individual features of the deceased. They represent an idealized picture. Sometimes one cannot even recognize whether it is a man's or a woman's mask. With the eyes wide open, the mummy is pictured in the moment of reawakening after death to live an eternal life in the world to come. The golden paint on the face symbolizes that the deaths' judgement has already decided in favor of the woman and that she is now a transfigured being.

Described parts of the head: mask, ring of justification, linen cover, skull, ointment, stick, coffin.
