Intraoperative 3D Printing in Surgery Simulation

Hamburg, 4 July 2019

VOXEL-MAN has presented a new application for its surgery simulator VOXEL-MAN ENT. With VOXEL-MAN 3D Printing, you can create your own digital models for 3D printing – simply at the touch of a button.

Intraoperative 3D print of a mastoid bone, produced with a Prusa I3 MK3S printer

A 3D print can be invoked at any stage of the surgical intervention.

3D print of the surgically removed bone. It can be used as a base for implant design.

Magnified 3D print of structures at risk such as facial nerve and semicircular canals. Supports were automatically generated by the 3D printer's slicer software and can easily be removed.

VOXEL-MAN 3D Printing provides an easy entry into 3D printing in medicine. The printed anatomical models of bone and other structures can be used as illustrative models, or for additional practical drilling exercises – with exactly the same anatomy as in virtual training.

A decisive innovation is the ability to use 3D printing at any time during a virtual surgical procedure. This allows you to create intraoperative surgical models – at exactly the stage that is most interesting for you or your students.

In addition to printing anatomical and surgical models, it is also possible to generate a printout of the part of the bone that was removed during surgery. This “negative” shape represents a first step towards the intraoperative creation of individual 3D printed implants.

The new 3D printing application is compatible with the VOXEL-MAN Tempo and VOXEL-MAN My Cases training applications. It can be used for the standard training cases as well as for your own cases created from imported CT or CBCT images.

VOXEL-MAN 3D Printing supports various file formats for single or multi-color (multi-material) models. The generated files are suitable for all types of 3D printers and materials such as thermoplastics (e.g. PLA, ABS), plaster, or metal (e.g. titanium). The models shown here were printed on a Prusa I3 MK3S (3D printer not included).
