Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is a powerful diagnostic technique for various medical specialties. However, interpretation of the resulting oblique ultrasound images is very difficult and requires a lot of experience and anatomical knowledge. Unfortunately, training opportunities are very limited, as it requires insertion of the endoscope into the human body.
VOXEL-MAN Sonography is a new virtual training simulator for endoscopic ultrasound. The endoscope is guided with a haptic device along the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum. As in reality, the trainee can see both the endoscopic image and the ultrasound image. In addition, understanding is facilitated with an anatomical cross-section corresponding to the ultrasound image, as well as 3 navigation images which illustrate the position and orientation of the ultrasound probe on transverse, sagittal and coronal planes. By mouse click, all images can be queried regarding to the displayed anatomical structures.
VOXEL-MAN Sonography combines three training sections for external ultrasound examination, endoscopic ultrasound and transrectal ultrasound (TRUS). EUS contains numerous training tasks in the mediastinum, adomen and duodenum. It provides both a longitudinal and a radial probe. The underlying high resolution anatomical model is based on the Visible Human.
VOXEL-MAN Sonography is currently in beta testing and will be available in 2023. All properties subject to change.
