Crown of Justification

Crown of justification of the Virtual MummyThe Egyptians believed in an eternal life after death which they would lead in the hereafter. They imagined the afterlife as a reflection of life on earth, but without physical or material hardships. To be admitted to this next world, the deceased had to pass a judgment of the dead before the god Osiris. Thereby it was examined whether his or her life had been lived according to moral standards.

In the Ptolemaic period, a wreath of plant material, in this case wrapped rushes, served as a symbol of a successfully passed Judgment of Osiris. It is known as the crown of justification.

Described parts of the mummy’s head: mask, crown of justification, linen wrapping, skull, ointment, fixation stick, coffin.
