In Ptolemaic and Roman times, the embalmers often used an element of fixation. This could be a wooden board placed under the body, or a little stick introduced directly into it.
In this case, the embalmers inserted a stick starting from the thorax along the cervical vertebrae to the palate. Judging from the cross-sections, the material of the stick can be identified as the middle rib of a date leaf.
